Phonak Naida B 90 SP BTE hearing aids

Phonak Naida B – In our opinion the best performing high power behind the ear hearing aid on the market. The Phonak Naida B has the ability to make the best of very severe and profound hearing losses with a very capable feedback manager (drastically reducing whistle) and ‘SoundRecover2’ which with smart technology can make sounds audible that previously would not have been heard.

The Phonak Naida B (based on the BeLong chipset with faster processing and extra performance features like SoundRecover2, BroadbandBooster, AutoSense OS and Binaural VoiceStream Technology) comes in four technology levels, the entry level Naida B30, the mid range Naida B50, at advanced level the Naida B70 pitches in, and at premium level with the full feature set available is the Naida B90.

The Phonak Naida B has the added benefit of being water and dust resistant for added protection with an IP68 rating, a rugged hearing aid for all environments!

Enhanced hearing performance

More audibility of high-frequency sounds

SoundRecover2 is the world’s first adaptive frequency compression algorithm, taking the benefits of SoundRecover to the next level. Even for those difficult to fit hearing losses where there is little usable high-frequency hearing, sound can be compressed to where it is audible. The adaptive behaviour ensures that the lowering of high-frequency sound occurs only when needed. Therefore, sound quality of mid and low frequencies is maintained, while high frequency sounds are made audible. SoundRecover2 provides clients with severe to profound hearing loss a true listening experience with its ability to produce an optimal balance between high-frequency audibility and sound quality.

More audibility with up to 6 dB more output

Severe to profound clients, especially those with a sensorineural loss accompanied by a significant conductive hearing loss, require additional power for a noticeable difference in audibility.

• BroadbandBooster: a new way of digitizing, sampling and filtering signals, boosts gain and output for loud broadband input signals – like speech – by up to 5 dB. Mid and loud incoming broadband signals are more audible without any distortion from peak clipping.

• New mechanical and acoustical design: the new xUP receiver for Naída B-RIC offers additional gain and output with up to 6 dB on the low frequencies without increased battery consumption.

AutoSense OS™

AutoSense OS is an operating system at the heart of the hearing aid that always selects the best settings to automatically maximize hearing performance. With over 200 distinct settings to draw from, it accurately captures, analyzes and blends sounds in real time to precisely match a client’s hearing environment. It allows clients to benefit from a seamless all-around hearing performance across different listening situations.

Binaural VoiceStream Technology™

The greater the degree of hearing loss, the greater the challenge. For this reason Phonak offers the most advanced features based on our unique Binaural VoiceStream Technology. It streams the full audio bandwidth in real time and bi-directionally in both ears for improved sound quality and unmatched speech understanding.

Increased confidence and reliability – 60% more robust

Clients with a severe to profound hearing loss rely heavily on their hearing aids and therefore expect durable and long lasting devices. Naída B will function in even the toughest environments, boosting the user’s confidence.

• With a new glass fibre reinforced material, Naída B is now 60% more robust than its predecessor which gives the client optimal confidence.

• Water and dust resistant with an IP68 rating.

Look and feel – Smaller devices for more people

• The fitting ranges of Naída B RIC and Naída B SP have been extended towards more severe losses, therefore many clients can be fitted with smaller devices than before.

• 25% thinner than its predecessors, making them more comfortable to wear and less visible.

Not all features are available on all models, for a full breakdown of the complete range see our Phonak Product and Features Comparison.

The Phonak Naida B has the facility of being able to make use of all the bluetooth streaming accessories that are available in the Phonak range, including DECT II, ComPilot II, RemoteMic and the very useful TV Link II.

FAQs - Naída B

Why does the severe to profound hearing loss definition start at 61 dB hearing loss?

The severe to profound hearing loss is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as average hearing thresholds equal to or greater than 61 dB hearing loss in the better ear.

Why 61? For sensorineural hearing, the maximum hearing loss resulting from damage to the outer rows of cochlear hair cells is around 60 dB (Moore 2016).  If the sensorineural hearing thresholds are greater than 60 dB hearing loss then a loss of inner hair cells is also very likely. This results in a large variability in speech recognition skills in quiet and in noise and the likely benefit of amplification will range from good to poor.

What are three key characteristics of severe to profound hearing loss?

Three key characteristics are:

  • Loss of auditory resolution ability
  • Loss of high frequency hearing
  • Loss of signal-to-noise ratio

What is slow compression?

Slow compression has slow attack and especially release times, which means the gain remains constant for more of the time, resulting in a system which behaves more like a linear system. In slow compression typical attack and release times fall between 5 s and 20 s (Moore, 2015).

What is the advantage of slow compression?

A key advantage of slow compression is that the temporal envelopes of the signal are preserved. This means that the loudness contrast between loud and soft sounds that is present in the unamplified signals is maintained. This is important for speech intelligibility  for some listeners (Moore, 2016; Madsen et al, 2015).

What is Adaptive Phonak Digital Contrast?

Adaptive Phonak Digital Contrast, or APD Contrast, is an alternative fitting formula which provides slow compression. It is like Adaptive Phonak Digital with slow time constants or slow attack and release times, plus some minor change to the frequency response curve. Adaptive Phonak Digital Contrast is found in the Fitting Formula Tab in Phonak Target 5.3.

For whom should APD Contrast be considered?

For clients who do not cope well with compression, or for clients with poor auditory resolution abilities, such as those with speech discrimination poorer than expected for the audiogram configuration APD Contrast must be considered.

Why offer SoundRecover2 to clients with a severe to profound hearing loss?

SoundRecover2 has been shown to significantly improve the audibility of high frequency sounds for people with profound high frequency hearing loss.

Is there a difference between the Roger and directional in Naída V and in Naída B?

Yes, the new Roger and directional setting in Naída B is activating the directional hearing aid setting at an even lower noise level, thus providing the benefit of Roger and directional in even more listening situations.

What is the benefit of Roger and directional?

Roger and directional does not only improve speech intelligibility in noise in the near field, it improves speech understanding in the far field as well.
(Latzel, M., Wagener, K. C., Vormann, M., Mülder, H.E. (2017). Speech Intelligibility in Dual Task with hearing aids and adaptive digital wireless microphone technology. In ISAAR proceedings.)

Why do Naída B clients need Roger?

Beyond the distance of 1.5 meters (5 feet) hearing aids, even the most advanced,  have limitations in providing an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio, which is a prerequisite for speech understanding. State-of the art Roger microphones are therefore required to bridge the understanding gap. With Naída B and Roger, clients with a severe to profound hearing loss get the best solution for communication nearby and over distance, in quiet and noise.

What is the Roger solution for Naída B-R RIC?

For Naída B-R RIC, the ComPilot II with an attached Roger X receiver can be used in combination with any Roger microphone.
