Product Description

CHUNKE engineers and manufactures the most advanced Ultrafiltration (UF) systems for water

treatment purposes that fit the needs of different industries and application such as chemical and

pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and beverage processing, and waste water treatment...etc.

How Ultrafiltration (UF) Systems Work?

Ultrafiltration (UF) systems have diverse membrane filtrations where hydrostatic pressure pushes
solvents against a very fine membrane. They block suspended particulates and solids that are large while water and solutes with a lower molecular weight are allowed to flow through the membrane.

Industry and research employ this separation process for purifying and concentrating macromolecular (103 - 106 Da) solutions, which are usually protein solutions. Ultrafiltration is similar to microfiltration, nanofiltration or gas separation, except it differs in the molecule sizes

it blocks.

To meet critical discharge criteria, ultrafiltration systems remove the need for clarifiers and

multi-media filters. Effective ultrafiltration systems use membranes that can be immersed,
back-flushable, and air scoured. Spiral wound UF/MF membranes offer excellent performance
for the clarification of process water and waste water.

Ultrafiltration (UF) Systems Advantages

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes systems are more reliable than a conventional multi-media filter,
which removed approximately 10 micron or larger of matter, where an ultrafiltration membrane pore size ranges from 0.01 to 0.10 micron. In addition to superior turbidity removal, UF membranes efficiently remove bacteria and most viruses.

- Superior filtration performance with high flux
- Very small nominal pore diameter (0.03 µm)
- Efficiently removes bacteria and viruses
- Occasionally back washed and air scoured to boost performance and removing the fouling
layer to extend operating life
- Low fouling membrane modules
- UF Outside-In or Inside-Out Configuration permits reduced plugging and higher solids loading
- Basic, vertical, modular design permits low cost, compact systems
- Effective membrane cleaning has a high chemical resistance and temperature tolerance

How RO system works ?

A) Pre-Chlorination Dosing System
If the feed water contains traces of heavy metals or contaminated, it is high recommended to dose some

chlorine to change the dissolved heavy metals to physical form, the media filter will be able to filter most

of it.

B) Raw Water Storage Tank
Although some RO Systems can draw water right out of a well or pipe feed, most systems start with a large

tank that stores the contaminated water. Not having enough feed water can damage a pump, so having a

large storage tank for your intake water is an easy way to make sure your pump lasts for as long as possible.
C) Feed Water Pump

A commercial or industrial pump provides the initial pressure for the Treatment System. This motor usually

provides enough water pressure to get through any pretreatment as well as the RO membranes, but if it

doesn't a booster pump may be necessary farther down the line.

D) Multi-Layer or Media Filter
As much as we hate to admit it, there are some things that membranes can't purify. Nitrates, a common

contaminant found in fertilizers and animal waste, are a good example of particles that dissolve too well

in water for reverse osmosis to catch them. Things like foul odor and taste usually aren't prevented by

reverse osmosis, either. A Multi-Layer filter can be filled with media that specifically targets the things

your RO System can't catch. If you need to eliminate these contaminants, a Multi-Layer Filter is a must.

An example of MMF or multi media filters is our CK-1 Series.

E) Activated Carbon Filter
Activated carbon filters are good solution to reduce organic, bad taste, smell and chlorine from the water.
F) Automatic Water Softener
Automatic water softeners are designed to remove water hardness, calcium and magnesium ions, for small

RO systems, we usually recommend water softeners instead of the antiscalant chemical dosing.

G) Antiscalant Chemical Dosing System
For larger RO systems, we use antiscalant dosing systems to dose our antiscalant RO chemical, which helps

in preventing membranes fouling.
H) Reverse Osmosis System
We finally have our Reverse Osmosis System. If a booster pump is necessary, it will typically be just before

this step. The Reverse Osmosis System can produce up to one million gallons of product water a day from

a steady intake, as well as a sizable amount of waste. Usually the waste water can be dumped down the

drain, but check with your local water authorities in case it needs to be handled with care.

I) Product Water Storage Tank
The permeate from the RO purification system will usually go to a large tank, where it is held for use. If it didn't,

the system would need to be running in order to have access to fresh water, which can be inconvenient.

Sometimes, an RO treatment System pumps water directly into a well or aquifer for recharging instead of

being used in many of the normal industries or applications it is used in.

J) Post-Chlorination Dosing System
If the permeate water is intended to be stored for more than one day, it is highly recommended to dose some

chlorine to maintain clean and non contaminated water.

K) Product Water Pump (Re-pressurization)
This pump repressurizes the permeate water to the point of use ends. This is selected based on the overall

travelling distance and required head. This pump must be selected in stainless steel to prevent any

contamination to the permeate water.

L) Product Water UV Sterilizer
The UV sterilizer is placed after the storage tank, and as a final disinfection device. Most of the time, we

either use post chlorination as a disinfectant agent, or ultraviolet sterilization.

Advantages:

The multi-media water filter systems operate for much longer periods of time (five or more times as long at the same filtration rate) before backwashing is necessary because the bed can hold more turbidity. Turbidity is trapped and held throughout the entire bed depth, rather than the top one or two inches.

Multi-media filtration is much better suited for use in a closed pressure tank since cracking of the bed, and subsequent breakthrough of turbidity is virtually eliminated and the need for visual inspection is unnecessary. The use of pressure tanks (rather than open basins or filters) is an obvious advantage for point-of-use filtration and could also be of real importance in the filtration of small community water supplies. More rapid filtration flow rates in multi-media filtration allow the use of smaller diameter tanks with equal or better results. A very high degree of clarity is achieved in the filtered water because of the fact that the finer particles of garnet at the bottom trap finer turbidity particles.

Another important advantage is that multi-media water filters can clarify water at a much higher flow rate than a single-media sand filter. This is 14 to 15 gpm per square foot of bed area, as compared to 2 gpm per square foot of bed area. This is a very important difference in the production of filtered water.

Filter Media Types:

1. Manganese Greensand media is treated siliceous material for treating water containing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide through oxidation.

2. Anthracite is recommended as a filter medium where additional silica in the water is not desirable and can remove lighter weight turbidity. Anthracite is typically used in applications where silica pick-up is undesireable.
3. ProSand is based on a rare natural mineral. Its unique properties radically improve the performance and cost of media filtration.
4. Calcite media is specially graded calcium carbonate compound for neutralizing acid with consistent dissolving rates for water treatment.

5. Filter AG is non-hydrous silicon dioxide with many advantages for the reduction of suspended matter.
6. Activated carbon medium is used to remove taste, odor, organic contaminants, and chlorine as well as being used in many drinking water applications.

7. Sand is the most common filter media. Generally, fine mesh sand is coupled with a course grain support bed to remove suspended solids and turbidity. Graded in various ranges, CHUNKE sand can be used as filtration medium or underbedding depending on particle size and application.

8. Gravel has a highly spherical shape that promotes good flow and even distribution in support beds.

9. Multimedia is required when maximum quality water is required and unwanted sediment is too small to be removed by standard media. It consists of multiple layers of increasing grain size to remove sediment as small as 10 microns.
