What is a hex flange nut?
Hex Flange Nuts are hex nuts with a wide flanged portion near one end that acts as an integrated non-spinning washer. Flange nuts are used to spread the load placed on the nut over a wider surface area to prevent damage to the installation material. They can come in serrated or non-serrated styles.
Do you need lock washer with flange nut?
The flange on a flanged nut will turn with the nut whereas a washer often will not. The washer, due to its resistance to turning, thus helps to control wear at the mating surfaces. In effect a washer will protect a surface more than a flanged nut. This can be huge if locking washers are also being used on the joint.
What is a flange nut used for?
A flange nut is a nut that has a wide flange at one end that acts as an integrated washer. This serves to distribute the pressure of the nut over the part being secured, reducing the chance of damage to the part and making it less likely to loosen as a result of an uneven fastening surface.
How does a flange nut work?

If the flange has serrations, these serrations bite into the material installed, making the nut less likely to loosen over time due to vibrations.
