HPMCis widely used in food and pharmaceutical industry as an additive, and are included in pharmacopoeia monographs of many countries; HMPC are approved by EMA as food additive for direct or indirect applications; HMPC is listed in GRAS monographs GRN 000213.WHO's JECFA database has no limits on the amount of HPMC intake. Ministry of Health of China approved HPMC as food additives and thickener (Number 20) in 1007 for all applications.
