Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) is an organic compound, its chemical formula is C10H16N2O8, is white powder at room temperature and pressure. It is a chelating agent that can bind with divalent metal ions such as Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+ and Fe2+. As most nucleases and some proteases need Mg2+ for their functions, they are often used as inhibitors of nucleases and proteases. It can also be used to remove the inhibition of enzyme by heavy metal ions.
