Introduction: 

 Calcite has a variety of crystal shapes. The main minerals of limestone, marble and beautiful stalactite are calcite. Limestone can be deposited in spring water and secondary minerals in igneous rocks. In almond caves of basalt flow, calcite fills in fissures of sedimentary rocks to form veins, or produces in the form of shells or reefs through biological processes.

Calcite, as a common carbonate mineral, widely exists in nature. On hand specimens, it is usually grey to white, showing three groups of complete cleavage; dripping dilute hydrochloric acid with strong foaming; hardness less than a knife. Under unipolarized light, the double crystal of calcite is parallel to the long diagonal line of rhombic crystal. Advanced white interference colours can be seen under orthogonal polarization. Alizarin red and potassium ferricyanide mixed dyes are usually used to dye the casting slices. Calcite is dyed red.

Main Application: 

1. Icelandic rocks are often used as polarizing prisms because of their birefringence. If they are cut into prisms in a certain way, they can be used as prisms of microscopes to detect the optical properties of minerals.

2. General calcite is used as industrial raw materials such as chemical industry and cement.

3. Calcite is used as flux in metallurgical industry and cement and lime in construction industry.

4. Filling additives in plastics, papermaking, toothpaste and food.

5. When calcite is added to glass production, the glass will become translucent, which is especially suitable for making glass lampshades.
