In 1834, Julius Herisson. Herisson invented the pulse meter. The lower end of the pulsometer was a metal hemisphere covered with a membrane and the upper end was connected to a capillary glass tube filled with mercury. The measurement was made by placing the membrane at the lower end of the metal ball over the radial artery, and as the radial artery pulsed, the mercury in the capillary glass tube fluctuated. This method can be considered the beginning of indirect blood pressure measurement in humans.
Julius Herisson The pulse meter invented by Herisson was a long way from what our blood pressure monitors look like today, and, moreover, measured the radial artery in the wrist, not the brachial artery in the upper arm as modern blood pressure monitors measure. So, conceivably, the development of the sphygmomanometer continued. 1896 saw the design of the Riva Rossi sphygmomanometer by Italian internist Riva Rossi. Nine years passed after the Riva-Rohi sphygmomanometer before the modern use of a stethoscope to determine systolic and diastolic blood pressure by auscultation.
Mercury column sphygmomanometers are more complicated to operate and require experienced medical personnel to use, but the measurement results are better. It is mainly used by hospital doctors, and is less used by general home users. It is important to note that before taking the blood pressure, the subject should rest quietly in a seated position for at least 5 minutes, refrain from smoking or drinking coffee for 30 minutes, and empty the bladder.
