What's a smart home?
A smart home is a home, usually a new one, that is equipped with special structured wiring to enable occupatns to remotely control or programm an array of automated home electronic devices by entering
a single command. For example, a homeowner on vacation can use a touchtone phone to arm a home security system (gas/smoke/water/PIR motion ...detectors), control temperature gauges, switch appliances on or off , control lighting, program a home theater or entertainment system, and perform many other tasks. The field of home automation is expanding rapidly as electronic technologies converage. The home network encompasses communications, entertainment, security, convenience, and information systems.
What's the benefit of all of this connectivity ? In a single word, convenience, having a smart home lets you do a lot of the things that you'd normally do -like adjusting the air conditioning, turning off the lights, pre-heating the oven, leading a key to your neighbor-with a lot less effort. You can set schedules for your appliances, so that certain things will happen at specific times of day, and some appliances will even learn your schedule and activites so that the amount of effort you have to put toward managing your home is drastically reduced .
