Sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5), an inorganic compound, is white or yellow crystal with strong pungent odor. It is soluble in water, and the aqueous solution is acidic.
When it comes into contact with strong acid, it releases sulfur dioxide and generates corresponding salts.
