Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is the use of ultraviolet radiation to destruct the DNA and RNA of bacteria or virus. The ultraviolet radiation (UVC) can cause irreversible destruction of microbial DNA molecules, which cause microorganisms fail to reproduce and eventually die.

Compared with residual chlorine (Chloramines), UVC is more healthy, and none side-effects.

The reaction in water with Chlorine will form toxic and harmful organic chloramines during the chlorination, which is responsible for Chlorine odor in indoor swimming pools. The chloramines also take sore eyes and skin allergies. UVC not only decomposes chloramines, but also can sterilize the environment. None of microorganism can immune to UVC, even those pathogens which Chlorine disinfection failed to decrease.
