Pugging is a method of mixing by pressing a sludge mass by hand. The aim is to make the sludge homogeneous and remove the air bubbles in it. Air bubbles in the sludge will come out of their place during firing and explode, damaging both the ceramic product and other products in the furnace. After pugging, ceramic sludge is shaped by various methods: sausage (wick, strip, rod), plate, lathe, pinch, mold methods are the basic shaping methods.
The product coming to the firing stage is cooked at the bed temperature depending on the clay used. Pottery clays are fired at 950-1000 degrees and porcelain and stoneware are fired at 1200-1300 degrees. Firing is done by following a specific heat schedule. As a result of cooking, the volume of the clay becomes smaller and the color changes. The baked product had now lost its fragile properties and became more resistant. Biscuit ready for glazing keeps the water in the glaze and keeps the glaze on the surface due to its ceramic porosity.
The shape of the formed product after it has partially dried is called "skin hardness ceramic'' in the ceramic language. At this stage, most of the water has flown (there is still 12-15% moisture in it) and flexibility is reduced. It is the best time to add decorative pieces, gouge and handle.
Now the biscuit product is ready to sort. The glaze consists of a mixture of ground glass, clay-colored materials and water and forms a smooth, waterproof, glossy layer on the surface of the ceramic. Glazing methods are very diverse: dipping, pouring, spraying, brushing, sponging, or a combination of these methods. However, some ceramics can be glazed when raw without first firing. Glazes are of different types: bright and transparent, white, dull, matt or textured.
For ceramic painting, the biscuit fired product must be free of dust and dirt. Can be wiped with a wet cloth.
When painting, the paint container and the order to be selected are needed. The paint is taken to the palette and mixed. The viscosity should flow for several minutes. A fine application is required here. If the glaze is too thick, it may cause the glaze to throw during cooking. Glazing starts from inside the object. On the first floor, the glaze will be quickly removed. However, care should be taken not to make a brush mark. As the product dries, its color will lighten and it will get a more pastel tone. It can then be driven out. Smaller brushes can be used for the base. After the first layer is completely dry and a half-hour period has passed, the second layer can be applied if desired, the third layer can be applied. The feet should also be wiped with a wet sponge. Finally, it is allowed to dry.
