After the enactment of the Sella Law in 1874 which established that in order to produce spirits an authorization was required and above all the payment of taxes in Sardinia began to be distilled in clandestinity.
Many became small smugglers, but only one became a legend. Efisio Pilloni, nicknamed the Grifu. A Sardinian shepherd passionate about distillation who loved to hide his distillate of juniper and wild plants along the coast among the rocks and shrubs of the Mediterranean scrub. Traces of him have been lost but a small notebook and some barrels depicting a griffin remain. The gins of the Grifu line want to pay homage to his recipes.
Grifu is a London Dry Gin. It is produced with Mediterranean juniper harvested on the coasts of the province of Oristano, Western Sardinia. It is a fresh and complex gin, obtained from the fresh berry with long distillation. This guarantees a pure and crystalline product. Inside we find only botanicals and spontaneous plants of the area. Its scents are balsamic and saline. On the nose the aromatic presence of the mix of various botanicals dominates, with a preponderant but extremely delicate hint of mastic and desolean sage. The light, soft and velvety aftertaste of juniper leaves a savory emotion in the finish like the retreat of a wave on the shore.
We recommend tasting it with a neutral tonic that enhances its flavors.
