Euryale ferox is a large annual aquatic herb. Submerged leaves sagittate or elliptic reniform, 4-10 cm long, without spines on both sides; Petiole without spines; Floating leaves leathery, elliptic reniform to rounded, 10-135 cm in diam., peltate, with or without curvature, entire, purplish below, pubescent, with sharp spines on both sides at vein branches; The leaves of Euryale ferox stick to the water surface in March, larger than lotus leaves, wrinkled. The leaves are cyan on the surface and purple on the back. The stems and leaves have thorns. The stem is more than one Zhang long, with holes and silk in the middle, tender and edible.
