TSP is the abbreviation for thermally stable polycrystalline diamond. It is a versatile material with the hardness of diamond, thermal stability up to 1200C high-temperature, and the ability to be manufactured into a variety of sizes and shapes i.e. Cubes, Cylinders, Discs, Rectangles, Triangles, Spheres etc.
TSP can be inserted into cutting tools, drilling bits, reamers, wire drawing dies, and other wear-resistant components, and it applies for many different fields even gemstone manufacturing. One of the primary applications for TSP is wear protection on the gage of drill bits. Because of the specific characteristics, TSP can be also used as a primary cutting element in softer formations.
Despite such widespread use, conventional PDC has several major drawbacks, including low themal stability(failure at temperatures above 350°C) and low impact strength. The resulting blunting and shattering of drill bits greatly slows the drilling process. One attempt to improve upon conventional PDC has been development of thermally stable polycrystalline (TSP) diamond composites using silicon carbide (SiC) binders. These composites are stable up to 1,200℃,but have reduced frature thoughness due to the brittleness of the Sic and diamond.
