Herring (official name Clupea) is a valuable commercial fish belonging to the herring family. Pacific and Atlantic herring are distinguished, depending on their geography. The length of herring can reach about half a meter, the average weight is about 0.5 kilogram. Herring spawning occurs all year round. During the spawning period, the fish unites into huge flocks, some of which even get out of the water. The diet includes various crustaceans, but fry of other fish are found in the stomachs of individuals.
Herring has a bright silver color, a little darkened in the back. On the sides, the body is in a compressed state, abdomen with a serrated edge. Herring scales are large, very rarely small. It lives mainly in seawater, but some species partially enter freshwater.
Herring meat has a pleasant flavor. It is suitable for cooking with heat treatment, and for smoking. In Russia, the most popular is salted herring, from which a large number of other products are made. Herring meat is very useful - it helps with psoriasis, ensures the normal functioning of the brain, improves eyesight. It is recommended as a prophylactic in asthma, increases the content of high-density lipoprotein in the body.
