Pool project in Arizona
In the fall of 2014, after a hot summer, I started planning the build of my own pool in the backyard of my property. As is typical in the somewhat rural areas around Phoenix my property is just over 1 acre or approximately 4,000sqm in size – plenty of space to build a big pool. Design goals were to have a lap pool that doubles as a great entertainment area for friends and family.
My design ended up being a 50’ x 15’ core with two triangular additions to accommodate large
steps and a swim-up bar
I laid out the rough shape in the dirt behind my patio to get a visual impression of location and size

The layout worked even better than expected so I went ahead and had architectural plans drawn up, applied for my building permit, hired contractors and ordered these beautiful blue glass mosaic tiles. Cindy at Foshan Fogas Building Materials and tiles designs were very helpful and professional. The tiles were reasonably priced(cheap mosaic tiles actually), great quality and arrived on time.
Start of excavation
I have a very big hole in my backyard now, but it does seem to resemble a swimming pool……
A couple of weeks later plumbing, conduit for LED lighting fixtures and rebar are finished. Time for the shotcrete contractor!
Shooting and shaping the concrete takes a team of 6 the better part of the day.
Great Tile Job
It looks easy to do but it certainly isn’t – making right angles and exact dimensions takes experience and skill. Very important requirement for a great tile job afterwards!
After a week of controlled drying time a waterproofing rubber membrane is rolled on. This minimizes
the loss of water.
FINALLY! The tile job is started and after a few square meters have been laid up I couldn’t be happier
with the looks of the tiles I chose! Gorgeous!
The tile job inside the pool has been finished and I installed all LED lights.
My friends were telling me it was overkill to put 30 lights in. Let’s see how it turns out in the end….
Pavers are being put around the pool and as a pool crown to match the existing pavers in my patio.
Cleaning up….
The bar needs finishing. Cindy sent me a variety of glass mosaic tiles and we made it a family project to create southwestern style mosaics. Tiles design were made by my daughter. This material is ice-jade glass mosaic tile, compare to dark blue golden-line glass mosaic tile, the cheap mosaic tile, ice-jade glass mosaic is much higher price.
Wiring of my LED lights is almost complete.
And at long last it is time to fill the pool!

UV protection is important in Arizona. The sun is very, very intense.
Swimming pool tile project
I still have a few finishing touches to apply but we have been enjoying the pool very much. The blue glass mosaic tiles have worked out so well and retain their beautiful looks. It is more expensive to do than the commonly used concrete/glass bead finish here but it’s longevity and the great choices of color made it worth it to me.
I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
