Application Field
Thermocouples are widely used in science and industry; applications include temperature measurement for kilns, gas turbine exhaust, diesel engines, and other industrial processes. Thermocouples are also used in homes, offices and businesses as the temperature sensors in thermostats, and also as flame sensors in safety devices for gas-powered major appliances.
How thermocouples work
Two different metal conductors are welded together to form a closed loop. If the temperature difference is generated by heating at the welding end (that is, the measuring end), a thermoelectric emf will be generated in the loop. This phenomenon is called the Seebeck effect. If the temperature of the other end (the reference end) is maintained (typically 0°C), the thermoelectric emf of the loop becomes a single-valued function of the temperature of the measuring end. The element that measures temperature by means of thermoelectric electromotive force, namely two pairs of metal conductors, is called a thermocouple. The size of the thermoelectric emf produced by the thermocouple is only related to the thermal electrode material and the temperature difference between the two ends, and the length and diameter of the thermal electrode has nothing to do with
