Introduction

1. There are three different herbs commonly called ginseng: Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) , American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) , and Siberian “ginseng” ( Eleutherococcus senticosus ) . The latter herb is actually not ginseng at all and is discussed in a separate article .

2. Asian ginseng is a perennial herb with a taproot resembling the shape of the human body. It grows in northern China, Korea, and Russia; its close relative, Panax quinquefolius , is cultivated in the United States. Because ginseng must be grown for 5 years before it is harvested, it commands a high price, with top-quality roots easily selling for more than $10,000. Dried, unprocessed ginseng root is called white ginseng, and steamed, heat-dried root is red ginseng. Chinese herbalists believe that each form has its own particular benefits.

3. Nutramax chooses 6 years panax ginseng root to extraction. Korean Ginseng Extract or Red Ginseng Extracts are a concentrated form of ginseng. It takes a long steaming process and drying process for Red Ginseng before the extraction. These process would increased the content of ginsenosides in the raw material.

4. Ginsenosides, unique compounds of the Panax species, are under basic and clinical research to investigate their potential for use in medicine.

5. Much research has been done on Ginseng with varying results. A study showed taking Siberian Ginseng daily can increase the number of white blood cells including activity of the T cells as well as the cytotoxic T cells and natural killer cells that eliminate invading cells and those that have been virally infected. A double blind-study with 93 volunteers with herpes simplex virus 2 (which can lead to genital herpes) found that there was a reduction (of 50%) in the number of outbreaks. Those that did occur were less severe and did not last as long.

6. Ginseng is known to contain phytoestrogens.
