Manuka honey is highly valued across the world. It is used in the finest restaurants, celebrities love it and it's a key ingredient in many of the best quality skincare products. But what makes it so different to other honey? The answer is methylglyoxal. Methylglyoxal is what gives manuka honey its antibacterial activity. It is found in other honeys, but in much lower amounts.
The concentration of methylglyoxal in the manuka honey determines its rating.
The minimum amount needed to be classified as manuka honey (as opposed to a manuka blend) is 100mg/kg. This would be rated as MGO 100+. MGO 200+ has at least 200mg of methylglyoxal per kg of honey, MGO 300+ is 300mg/kg etc. The higher concentration of MGO in the honey, the higher the antibacterial activity. Our honeys range from MGO 100+ to MGO 800+.
