Autmatic by-pass valve

Automatic Bypass Valve (ABV) controls flow of water through a bypass circuit which is typically installed between flow and return pipework on a large system or branch of a district heating & coolong system. Building Regulation advice states that if a bypass is installed, an Automatic Bypass Valve must be fitted. The valve saves energy by only allowing flow through the bypass when needed i.e. when flow through the system is reduced when zone valves or radiator thermostats are closing. The use of an ABV is recommended by the UK government as Best Practice in the CHeSS (Central Heating System Specifications) guide to central heating systems. Government approved guidance covering the part of the building regulations related to the conservation of energy states that in all systems in which the boiler manufacturer’s instructions demand a bypass, or specify a minimum flow rate through the boiler, that an automatic bypass valve may be fitted. This type of valve modulates open when necessary to ensure that the appropriate minimum flow is maintained through the boiler, at all other times it is closed thus preventing unnecessary and wasteful circulation through the bypass and the boiler. In addition to providing boiler minimum flow control, automatic bypass valves can be used to reduce persistent water velocity noise that may occur in some systems.

The automatic by-pass valve is a self-contained product that must be installed in each system with a small or medium power boiler and what ever the valves are thermostatic or manual. When closing the valves it generates a pressure increase in the installation. This automatic by-pass valve, installed in order to create a by-pass between the incoming and out going flow, will avoid the installation differential pressure increasing. In addition, the automatic by-pass valve automatically guarantees an installation constant flow. The pump is duly protected and the noises due to over-pressure are avoided (when trvs are closing for instance).
