It has a role as an angiogenesis inhibitor, an apoptosis inducer, an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory agent, an antineoplastic agent and a plant metabolite. It is a diterpenoid, a member of furans, an organic heteropentacyclic compound, a tertiary alcohol and a primary alcohol.
