Commonly known as ‘Black Turmeric’ is a perennial herb with bluish-black rhizome of the family Zingiberaceae. This species has been gradually increasing in popularity in the interested community for its unmatched medicinal properties. In ethno medicinal practices, the traditional healers use the genus Curcuma for the treatment of various types of diseases but Curcuma Caesia Roxb is a very less known and almost untouched drug. Rhizomes of the plant have been explored for antifungal activity, smooth muscle relaxant and anti‑asthmatic activity, antioxidant activity, analgesic activity, locomotor depressant, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects, anxiolytic and CNS depressant activity, anti‑bacterial activity, anti‑ulcer activity and many other miscellaneous activities.

Supriya Pattanayak comes with over 25 years of experience in the development sector and academia. She has earned a reputation of being a highly competent professional working with Bilateral, Multilateral, Government and non-government organisations. She has demonstrated excellent relationship management skills with multiple stakeholders for policy advocacy and good program management skills. She has specifically provided advisory support in all programs on social development and governance aspects. She has maintained oversight of all DFID programs in the State of Odisha over the past 15 years. She has taken on increasingly challenging roles in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating large programs with a focus on results. In addition to this, Supriya maintains her interest in academics, being involved in teaching/ training/ supervision, research and conducting study tours across several continents. Presently Supriya holds the position of an Adjunct Professor at the RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia and is a Research Fellow at the St Petersburg State University, Russia. She has a number of publications to her credit.

HOW DOES IT WORK
When a gas such a Carbon Dioxide is contained under high pressure and heated, it changes physical properties, becoming a supercritical fluid. In this state, it has the solvating power of a liquid and the diffusivity of a gas. In short, it has properties of both a gas and a liquid. This means that supercritical fluids work extremely well as a processing media for a wide variety of chemical, biological, and polymer extraction.
Another powerful aspect to super critical fluid extraction (SCFE) is the ability to precisely control which component(s) of a complex matrix are extracted and which ones are left behind. This is accomplished through precise control of several key parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rates and processing time. Yields are much greater with SCFE than extractions performed by traditional techniques, and the product purity is very high. Decomposition of materials almost never occurs due to the relatively mild processing temperatures.
