Zinc Pyrithione is a chelate that is very effective as an anti-mold and anti-bacterial compound. Its anti-dandruff activity was discovered by chance in the mid-1960s when P&G was exploring agents to combat ringworm infections. EEC and GB7916-87 stipulate that the maximum allowable concentration of zinc pyrithione in cosmetics is 0.5% by mass and is only used in products that are washed off after use. A section makes with a concentration of 250 to 1000 mg/kg (active), which can be used in gels, creams, lotions, puffs and dandruff shampoos, and also in deodorant and disinfectant products.
