Hoodia gordonii is a leafless spiny succulent plant with medicinal uses. It grows naturally in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa and Namibia. The indigenous Bushmen call this plant. The genus encompasses a number of varieties of plant of which Hoodia gordonii (Masson) Sweet ex Decne is one species. Hoodia plants are succulents, not cacti, although they do have a spiny appearance similar to cacti.

Hoodia plants has long been used as a food for anti-hungry by the indigenous populations of Southern Africa, Bushmen or the San of the Kalahari Desert. By eating the plant, the San people loose the desire to eat and drink, and forget hunger, which are very interesting thing and very important for the long distant travelers who have to face hunger. This function of Hoodia Gordonii have been found by the San people for maybe thousands of years, but the first scientific investigation of the plant was conducted at South Africa’s national laboratory till end of last century, and it has already become the most famous natural resources for anti-obesity (Appetite suppressant) use by now.

Hoodia Gordonii is touted for its anti-obesity function. Hoodia gordonii extract has been proven to decrease calorie intake in human volunteers. Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in overweight and healthy volunteers using an extract of Hoodia gordonii proved that the large doses of extract caused a statistically significant reduction in the average daily calorie intake. In addition, a statistically significant reduction in body fat content was also observed compared to the placebo group after two weeks. A clinical trial conducted by scientists demonstrated that repeat dose administration of large doses of Hoodia gordonii extract caused a statistically significant decrease in daily calorie intake. By day 15 the calorie intake had decreased by approximately 1000 kcal per day.

The key phytochemical constituents of the herb are oxypregnane steroidal glycosides, called P57, which is responsible for its appetite-suppressant.
