Q: What are smoke alarms?
A: Smoke alarms are self-contained devices that incorporate a means of detecting a fire (smoke detector) and giving a warning (alarm), usually a very loud beeping sound. Smoke alarms can detect fires in their early stages and give you those precious minutes to enable you and your family to leave your house in safety.
Q: How many smoke alarms should be fit in a home?
A: For maximum protection an alarm should be fitted in every room (except bathrooms), you should choose the type most suited to the risk in each room. For minimum protection the number to be fitted will depend on the type of home you live in.
Q: What is the best way to test a smoke alarm?
A: It is recommended to test alarms by pressing the test button built-in to the unit, as this is designed to simulate the detection of the target stimuli (usually smoke, heat, or CO) at the alarm sensor.
Q: How long do smoke alarms last before needing replacement?
A: It is recommended that smoke alarms are replaced after 10 years. This is because the sensors in the smoke alarms become less sensitive and may not activate when a fire is present.
Q: How long do the batteries last in smoke alarms?
A: The 9V alkaline batteries last 12~18 months. Lithium batteries will usually last 5x longer than their alkaline counterparts, achieving around 5 years lifetime. Some lithium cells are also rechargeable, and when used in a mains-powered alarm may last for the entire functional lifespan of the alarm.
Q: What is the proper placement of smoke alarms?
A: It is important that you have the proper placement for your smoke alarms. Install your alarms at least 20 feet from appliances like furnaces and ovens, which produce combustion particles. Alarms should be at least 10 feet from high humidity areas like showers and laundry rooms, and at least 3 feet from heat/AC vents. Be sure to install a smoke alarm in each bedroom, one at the top of each stairwell, and one on every level. Smoke alarms are usually screwed onto the ceilings at least 30 centimeters (12 inches) away from any wall or light fitting. You should always make sure that your alarm is fitted in a place where it can be heard throughout your home – particularly when you are asleep.
