Silicon carbide is a ceramic-like compound formed by the bonding of silicon and carbon. Silicon carbide is found in nature as a rare mineral, moselyte, and is used as an abrasive. Silicon carbide can be used in materials that require high durability, such as brake pads, clutches and bulletproof vests. It was also used in the manufacture of electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes and early radio detectors.
