Strong points:The diamond of leathers.
A diamond of leathers produced from horse rump ( buttocks ), the leather fibres are uniquely intertwined and layers are drawn out, finished with only the dye, oil and gloss agent that is as close to a basic finish as possible.
A beautiful leather that keeps it’s natural texture.
Their artisans’ finishing techniques are renowned in Japan, and some of the country’s leading apparel brands and “American Casual”-style clothing manufacturers use their handiwork to produce popular jackets and boots. One of these leather jackets is among the products exhibited in this booth––please touch and experience its quality first-hand. The artisans at Shinki-Hikaku have a sterling reputation not only in Japan but also in other Asian nations, and their new horsehide creations each season have become indispensable trendsetters on the Japanese leather fashion scene.
While Shinki-Hikaku’s horsehide products have many outstanding features, as described above, a horse obviously gets a lot more exercise during its lifetime and moves a longer distance than other animals whose hides are used. This means the hide is sometimes chafed or scratched in places, and these irregularities may be clearly visible, depending on factors such as the finishing process used. At Shinki-Hikaku, however, they do not attempt to conceal these natural marks that testify to the fruitful life of the horse.
They use two different tanning processes, one employing vegetable tannin in a pit tank, and the other chrome tanning. Each person has their own definition of fine leather, and nobody can say that “chrome tanning is good, while tannins are bad,” or vice versa. It is a good idea for anyone planning to creating leather products to have a thorough understanding of leather properties in the planning stages before embarking on a design.
Shinki-Hikaku’s horsehide has a rich palette of variations that have been cultivated over the course of our 60-year history. In their booth, feel for yourself these products that distill the essence of their artisans’ craft.
We are sustained by our customers. We are sustained by leather. We will continue to convey these feelings of gratitude in the future.
