Evergreen climbing shrub, up to 5 m tall.Stems reddish brown with barbed prickles.
Trifoliate leaves alternate; leaflets are leathery, elliptic-oval to oval-lanceolate, lateral leaflets are smaller, petioles and midrib below leaflets have no spines or sparse spines; petioles are 1-2 cm long, with Brown glands with fine spines; stipules connate with petioles below the middle, and the separation part is linear-lanceolate.
Flowers solitary at the top of lateral branches, 5-8 cm in diameter; pedicels stout, up to 3 cm long, with straight spines; receptacles inflated, with fine spines; sepals 5, ovate-lanceolate, some tops expanded into leaf-like, glandular Hairs; petals 5; stamens numerous, anthers T-shaped; pistils with numerous carpels, free, tomentose, style linear, stigma rounded.
The mature receptacle is red, spherical or obovate, with straight spines, and a long persistent calyx at the top, containing many bony achenes.
Flowering in May.
The fruiting period is September to October. It grows in deserted mountains and rocky places.
Distributed in Central China, South China, East China and Sichuan, Guizhou and other places.
