Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (HS) belonging to the Malvaceae family have long been used in indigenous system of medicine for treating hypertension. The extracts of HS exert potent antioxidant effects in vitro, achieved via the presence of several active constituent’s chief among which are flavonoids and vitamins. Recent pharmacological studies have shown that HS extracts significantly reduced blood pressure in humans and in experimental animal’s rat model of hypertension and inhibited vascular tone in isolated vascular preparations including the rat thoracic aorta. However, the exact mechanisms responsible for these effects of HS are not fully understood. In addition, the possibility that the extracts of HS could produce its relaxant activities in hypertension was not investigated. The present investigation was, therefore, undertaken to examine the possible mechanisms underlying the hypotensive effects of HS. For that purpose, we analyzed the effects of the crude methanolic extract of calyces of HS (HSE) on vasomotor responses of aortic rings isolated from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
