Nishio Matcha is located in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, and our production volume is among the highest in Japan ~Nishio, where the 730-year history of matcha lives on~
Blessed with a warm climate and the rich soil and mists brought by the Yahagi River, Nishio is one of Japan’s leading producers of matcha, accounting for about 20% of the national production.
Its history of matcha production began with the planting of tea trees on the grounds of Jisso-ji Temple, founded in 1271, by its founder Shoichi Kokushi. It was reputedly favored by monks and aristocrats of the time. Tea cultivation later spread when it was encouraged in the early Edo period.
Matcha production began in earnest during the early Meiji period. Tea cultivation by local farmers began with the introduction of tea trees and tea making techniques from Uji by Kojuin Temple abbot Adachi Jundo in 1872, transitioning to the cultivation and manufacturing of tencha (the raw tea before it is made into powdered matcha) in the late Taisho period, which led to it becoming known as one of Japan’s leading centers of matcha production and the flowering of a unique matcha culture.
