Products Description | Tween (or polysorbate) is a non-ionic surfactant with a peculiar smell, warm and slightly bitter. It is a series of partial fatty acid esters of polyoxyethylene sorbitol. It is widely used as an emulsifier and a solubilizer for oils. Polysorbate is generally regarded as a non-toxic and non-irritating material. According to WHO's assessment, the daily intake can be as high as 25 mg/kg body weight based on total polysorbate. | |
Function and Application
1. Emulsify protein in biological experiments. When used, Tween and the same type of Triton X-100 (polyethylene glycol octyl phenyl ether) non-ionic detergent will not damage the structure of the protein and can reduce the impact on the protein. The destruction of the original interaction. Ionic detergents such as SDS destroy the structure of the protein.
2. Used as a blocking agent in biological experiments. The blocking agent should block all unbound sites without replacing the target protein on the membrane, not binding to the target protein's target position, or cross-reacting with antibodies or detection reagents. Tween-20 has the effect of refolding antigens and can improve specific recognition ability. When doing western blot, blocking the unbound sites on the membrane with inert protein or non-ionic detergent can reduce the non-specific binding of the antibody. The most common blocking agents are BSA, skimmed milk powder, casein, gelatin and Tween-20 (0.05-0.1%) dilute solution.
3. It is often used as an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier to disperse other substances evenly in the solution. It is mainly used for pesticides, food, and cosmetics. Combined with other emulsifiers such as sodium lauryl sulfate or Span, it can increase the stability of the emulsion. Tween can be used to emulsify essential oils and dissolve them in water liquids to fully function. Relatively speaking, Tween 20 is milder, and Tween 80 is more emulsifying.
