Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a new technology that combines high-efficient membrane separation technology with conventional activated sludge (CAS) process. It uses membrane modules which intercept the activated sludge and other solids in the water to replace the traditional secondary clarifier, so that the highly activated sludge can be effectively maintained in the bioreactor and therefore a higher concentration of biomass and a longer sludge retention time (SRT) can be achieved. The volumetric loading is increased and the quality of the effluent is also greatly improved. Other benefits include smaller space requirements and less excess sludge to be discharged, etc.

Due to the operation mode of negative pressure suction (vacuum driven), the energy consumption is 10 - 20 times less than those side-stream membrane modules which are driven by positive pressure.
