What is Press brake tooling? How do we choose and buy them?

Knowing the types of sheet metal bending punches is the first step to understanding what can be manufactured. Although you may not be a specialist in bending, somebackground knowledge can help you with identifying impossible bends. Most of these punches actually achieve a variety of bends but each have their own advantages and specifics.

Depends of the application and requirements of bends there are various geometry shapes for punches and dies of press brake tooling to perform standard or special sheet metal bending. Without the connection to the press brake clamping system the type of the tool is important otherwise the required bend is impossible to achieve.

The three standard sheet metal punch dies are the Sheet Metal Punch Dies“Straight Punch”, the “Gooseneck Punch” and the“Acute Punch” and from these most metal forming done with a press brake can be accomplished. Then there are several varieties of offset punch and dies, large radius punch and dies and hemming punch and dies for combining multiple steps of a metal forming operation.

Press brake dies(bottom dies) are strong in stucture, typically crafted from materials such as T8 steel, T10 steel, and the more expensive Cr12MoV or 42CrMo(which is the most regular material Shark Tooling use) for high strength, superior durability and the best possible resistance to wear and tear.Dies also come in a wide range of types, from single Vee shapes up to two-way Vee, to multi-Vee versions. Which you choose will depend on your fabrication needs and your Press Brake tonage matters a lot as well.
1. Single Vee dies are the most commonly used, as their name suggests they possess a single ‘Vee’ shaped groove of varying angles with the minimum distance from the middle of the vee to the back of the tool to allow the minimum joggle available without crushing the tool. It is most commenly used for hydrualic CNC press brake. Fast enough to change dies.

2. Two-way Self-Centring Vee Dies have two successive grooves (of differing angles and widths) which give the operator the convenient potential of working continually without any need for retooling if your workpiece has different bend requirements.

3. Multi-Vee Dies come in a wide variety of shapes usually spread across their four sides. This gives impressive variety in terms of radius and material thickness you can work with. Although it is important to remember that rotating the die is vital in order to utilise a different vee. It is the most widely used for NC press brakes and for some CNC press brakes as well.

Punch holders are very important parts of a press brake.The tooling press brake punch holder, which is manufactured to fit in virtually any press brakes, feature spring pads to absorb impact and can be used with or without guide posts, depending on the application. They can improve greatly on your bending productivity one the one hand and protect your press brake from bending inpact on the other hand. There are different types of punch holders in terms of punch fix place.

There is not a standard size or type of punch holders, each press brake manufacturer has different designs and dimensions.
