High frequency litz wire is used in transformers and chokes to reduce the power losses that occur due to the eddy current and reduce the skin effect. Operating frequency determines the litz wire parameters and defines the diameter of a single wire. The higher operating frequency of inductive components, the smaller diameter of a single wire.
Insulation of copper wires is made of polyurethane. This fact makes it easy to tin terminals of winding. High dielectric strenght can be achieved by one or multiple wrapping polyester tape (Mylar), polimide tape, kapton tape, etc. Despite this, the litz wire has an excellent flexibility. Usually litz wire is supplied in round cross-section. However it can be profiled and made in square or rectangular cross section to optimize the winding area.
