What is Spirulina? 

Spirulina is a natural “algae” (cyanbacteria) powder that is incredibly high in protein and a good source of antioxidants, B-vitamins and other nutrients. When harvested correctly from non-contaminated ponds and bodies of water, it is one of the most potent nutrient sources available. It is largely made up of protein and essential amino acids, and is typically recommended to vegetarians for its high natural iron content. 

The high concentration of protein and iron also makes it ideal during pregnancy, after surgery, or anytime the immune system needs a boost.Our spirulina is non-irradiated and non-GMO.

 

 

At present, Spirulina industry is developing rapidly in China. Spirulina farming technology continuously updated. The cost of production was fairly decline. These have provided good conditions for aquaculture and the development and application of aquatic bait. Spirulina is widely used in aquaculture, in addition to a reduction in costs of algae powder, the main reason is that Spirulina can promote the growth of cultured species, increase appetite, increase disease resistance, and increase the survival rate of larvae in aquaculture, and it’s breeding fast and easy to cultivate.
 
 

 

Spirulina use in the crab breeding and nurturing
 
    Fed Spirulina dry powder or simply fresh Spirulina, the crab larval survival rates were 53% and 50% respectively. The crab larval survival rate greatly improved compared with the larvae fed egg yolks added Artemia. With the growth of larval and the predation capacity strengthening, the animal active feed was particularly important. In the fleas larval stage, the larvae living by ingestion, spirulina can be directly put into water.
    To the juvenile nurture stage, the crab juvenile adopted holding eating way, we could make granular feed with fresh spirulina added starch to feed them. Fresh spirulina, unlike spirulina dry powder rotted and polluted the water, didn’t die after being put into the water and continued to growth. The spirulina grows using the ammonia nitrogen in water, which played the role of purifying water.
 
 Spirulina use in shrimp cultivation
 
    At present there are a lot of reports on spirulina use in shrimp baits. The experiments of Institute of Mariculture of Shandong Province Showed that spirulina powder could increase 54.47% of the shrimp larvae hatch, which increased nearly 200 Yuan RMB benefits per cubic meter of water. At the same time the resistance to disease had markedly improved.  Disease and bacteria multiplying had not been found. The test results of Beijing Agricultural University showed that Spirulina could substitute egg yolk and soy milk to feed young shrimp in juvenile metamorphosis stage and promoted growth and development better than to feed egg yolk and soy milk. The experiment of Aquaculture Institute of Guizhou Province made in Macrobrachium rosenbergii nursery grounds in Beihai city of Guangxi Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region found that 10 hours after feeding spirulia, under the microscope observation from the back of Macrobrachium rosenbergii larvae, we could see that their stomach and intestines filled with blue-green spirulina, which was different from feeding egg yolk and Artemia feed. The experiment indicated that Macrobrachium rosenbergii uptake Spirulina. Statistical data of the experiment showed that the survival rate of larvae was 75.5% by spirulina added Artemia cultivating Macrobrachium rosenbergii, which raised 13.8% compared with feeding eggs added Artemia. Thus the original single production mode of feed was changed and the yields increased.
 
Spirulina use in scallop cultivation
 
    In spring, the parent scallops are usually put indoors to promote gonad maturity to get the larvae by heating in scallops breeding process. The same volumes of microalgae culture pool are built at the same time. But the temperature is low in spring, short supply of algae and poor results of starch are the major problems for scallop farmers. Institute of Marine Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences researched and made feeds for parent scallops, which used Spirulina as raw materials and replaced by fresh algae. As a result, the spawn and hatchability of the parent scallops were high. Spirulina mixed feed can reduce infrastructure investment, labor intensity, feed cost and risk, which also advance breeding and increase income.
 
 Spirulina use in abalone breeding
 
    Institute of Marine Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences started to research and develops spirulina feed in 1985, which included breeding, factory raising and cage cultivation in sea. Compared with Japanese feed, the Spirulina abalone feed China developed has the following advantages. The feed has good water resistance; the mortality of young abalone is low; the shell is thick when abalone grow up, which is not easy injury. The abalones with dark green shell are close to wild abalone and very welcomed by consumers. The abalones fed by Japanese feed are obviously different from the wild abalone. In addition, China's feed production cost is only half of Japan feed. If the north abalone fed spirulina feed, the survival rate greatly improved, which has a lot of economic value.
 
Spirulina use in eel cultivation
 
    Eel fed spirulina feed grows well, and the shape, size, color, surface are significant change. The commonly used amount is 1% to 3%. Eel has high nutritional value. However, in artificial breeding process, the individual growth varied. Many of them are less than the collection standard and become zombie eel, which are bad for economic efficiency. Spirulina contains the unknown growth factor with keeping growth effect. Using spirulina as food additives, eel weight will significantly increase. The raising efficiency is good.
 
    In short, as natural resources feed, Spirulina play an important role in aquaculture. Especially in the aquatic breeding, the results are quite significant. If spirulina feed further improves to the microcapsules, help digestion, and promote the shell development, its effect are more obvious. The prospects of Spirulina will be very bright in the feed applications.
