Octyl glycol is a multi-functional additive that can be used as a viscosity regulator, wetting agent and skin conditioner to give many cosmetics a moisturizing, emollient and wetting characteristic solution. Compatibility with many cosmetic ingredients and its extensive effect on bacteria independent of pH makes it useful in a wide range of personal care products such as moisturizers, suncreams, anti-aging treatments, lip gloss, mascara, concealer, cleansers and foundation. It can be used alone or in combination with other ingredients. It has strong antibacterial activity when used with other alkyl diol preservatives. Therefore, it can be used as a substitute for niborgin and other undesirable preservatives.
