Brief Introduction
and Workflow
Offset printing also called lithography, uses plates to get the job done. The plates are typically made from aluminum. Art and text are put on the plates which are dampened by water and ink via rollers on the press. The ink adheres to the image area and is then transferred to a rubber cylinder. The ink and image are transferred to paper as it passes around the cylinder.
Digital printing, which does not use plates to transfer ink to paper, use digital files in stead that are created on a computer using publishing software, photo software, or mapping software, and are then sent to the printer (over WiFi or Cat 5 cable) where the images, maps, or photos are transferred or printed onto paper. Both laser printers and inkjet printers can be referred to as digital printers.

Digital printing simulates the color using a four-color matching process, so some digital printers may offer less accurate color matching on projects. If you need four-color printing, digital may offer advantages in lower up-front costs.
