Ports can be divided into internal and external ports. The inner port is the main commercial port area, and its wharfs are distributed along the "Y" channel at and below the intersection of mistik River and chalxi river. The ship enters the port from the southeast, and the channel is 12.4m deep.
The main wharf areas in Hong Kong are from south to North:
(1) In the South Boston wharf area, on the southwest side of the access channel, there are more than 10 jetties extending to the northeast, most of which are military. Commercial terminals include sea and land container terminals in the southeast and federal jetty passenger and cargo terminals in the northwest.
(2) Boston wharf area, on the West Bank of the main channel, has more than 20 jetties with good wharf equipment.
(3) In the Charleston wharf area, there are dozens of jetties in the west of the main channel and the North Bank of the Charles estuary. Charles River bank has an advanced grain loading and unloading dock.
(4) The wharf area on the mistike river bank is at the Northwest branch at the top of the main channel, with a channel depth of 11 meters. There is a public container terminal on the Charleston bank, a special wharf for cement and sugar loading and unloading, and an oil loading and unloading terminal on the North Bank of the river.
(5) East Boston wharf area, on the east side of the main channel, confronts with the berthton and Charleston wharf areas. There are nearly 50 jetties, mainly steel terminals, as well as grain and grocery terminals.
(6) The wharf area on the Bank of chalxi river is located along the Northeast branch at the top of the main channel. The channel is 11 meters deep. There are more than 20 wharfs, mainly loading and unloading oil.
There are 259 jetties or wharves in Hong Kong, with a total length of 48 km. The water depth of the main wharf front is 10-12 meters. At present, the annual throughput is about 20 million metric tons (24 million metric tons in 1979), and the container handling capacity was 150000 TEUs in 1980. Imports mainly include petroleum products, sugar, coal, cement, pulp, chemical fertilizer, wool, automobile, wood, etc; Export steel, wheat, paper, chemical products, dairy products, etc.
