It's made out of metal. It works very well for what it is intended for. I am very satisfied with it, it's feels strong and sturdy when I lift my cast iron grate.

Yes it would work very well, and it pick up grill in the center so it's well balance with one hand and no worry getting burn.
4.What's the width of the part that goes between the individual grill slats? Worried it's not narrow enough for my grill
You can tilt it. I would guess a minimum of 3 to 4 inches.
