This bokken is made of selected top quality Japanese Distylium racemosum wood better known as ISUNOKI in Japan and features Katana-like shape for a more realistic shinken feeling when training.
The Distylium racemosum is a plant from the family of Hamamelidaceae and is inhabiting mainly in the Far East. Because of its excellent hardness and strength, this wood piece often finds in the production of Japanese wooden sword. From the ancient days, Distylium racemosum is the Samurai warriors' favorite piece of wood to develop their sword skills and techniques.
The Distylium racemosum is characterized by the fine grains and the warm and charming coloration, which ranges from a light creamy color to the dark chocolate color, gives it a feeling of exquisiteness. The Distylium racemosum is a hard wood, however, due to it's nature as a young wood, it's more prone to dents and damage due to impact, which is why it's not recommended for intense contact practice.
Bokken – also called Bokuto - are wooden swords are used for practicing Kendo, Aikido, Iaido and other martial arts as substitutes for more dangerous and expensive swords like Katana. In order to safely handle katana or other Budo weapons, a swordsman must first master techniques with a training sword. Because they are made from real, carefully selected wood like shinai, Bokken must be none the less checked regularly for cracks or splinters. As they are carefully crafted, they must be equally carefully maintained.
