Perhaps known as Spilanthes or Para Cress, a powerful medicinal herb found in Asia and South America. This member of the Asteraceae has been used for centuries as a topical treatment, as well as an antidote and pain management for wounds and infection. Acmella Oleracea is an upright or prostrate perennial plant. The plant is often cultivated as an annual for its edible leaves in parts of the tropics. It is also grown widely as an ornamental because of the attractive colorful heads. Raw Acmella leaves and flower heads have a pungent taste which causes numbing of the mouth when chewed and induce the production of saliva.
Apart from medical use, the plant has also earned its reputation among beauty and cosmetic industry for its wrinkle removal like effect similarly to those wrinkle removal injection by causing the muscles to relax and temporarily leading a reduction in the appearance of the fine lines and wrinkles. Due to Spilanthol, a bioactive compound responsible for the local anesthetic properties of the plant, Acmella extract are used extensively in cosmetic compositions as an anti-wrinkle product to reduce fine lines and any sign of aging. Together with anti-oxidants agent contain the plant, it is also believed to inhibit effect on the formation of melanin, resulting in a brighter skin.
