Beryllium is a fairly soft metal, brittle and strong. It is used as a coating on X-ray tubes because it is transparent to the X-ray range. It also has military and nuclear industry applications. Beryllium can be used as a compound with a purity of 99% to 99.999% (ACS grade is ultra-high purity) or it can be used as an evaporation source material in the form of pellets, rods, wires and particles. Beryllium oxide is an insoluble dense pellet used for optical coating and thin film applications. Beryllium fluoride is used in, for example, metallurgy, chemical and physical vapor deposition, and certain optical coatings. Beryllium can also exist in soluble forms, including chlorides, nitrates and acetates. |
