Submarine Cable Type
Impregnated paper-covered cable
suitable for lines not exceeding 45kV AC and not more than 400kV DC. Currently limited to installation in waters with a depth of less than 500mSelf-contained oil-filled cable
Suitable for DC or AC lines up to 750kV. Because the cable is oil-filled, it can be laid without difficulty in waters with a depth of 500m.
Extruded insulated (XLPE, EPR insulated) cable
Suitable for up to 200kV AC voltage. Compared with polyethylene, ethylene-propylene rubber can prevent tree branches and local electricity leakage, and make submarine cables function more effectively.
"Hydraulic" pipe cable
It is only suitable for cable systems that are several kilometers long, because very long cables are pulled into the pipeline, which is subject to great mechanical constraints.
Inflatable (pressure assisted) cable
Inflatable cables using impregnated paper bags are more suitable for longer submarine cable networks than oil-filled cables, but because of the need to use high-pressure operation in deep water, it increases the difficulty of designing cables and their accessories, generally limited to water depths of 300m .
